Team Pohutukawa Newsletter

From the Team Leader

Kia ora Parents and Caregivers, welcome to Term 1 2020 at Pigeon Mountain Primary School. A special warm welcome to our new families joining us for the first time this year. We would also like to welcome Corinne Gohacki who is a student teacher from America, working alongside Miss Tsang in Room 12.  We are very excited to begin this year and we look forward to getting to know you all. This year brings lots of fun and exciting opportunities for learning and development and we look to working alongside you to create these experiences with and for the students. We will continue to integrate, live and learn through our school values (Excellence, Respect, Resilience and Responsibility). Please encourage these values at home and within the community too. We always appreciate and value your support and contributions in any way, shape or form. Thanks for being so amazing for the students and teachers!

Before/During/After School

Please ensure children stay off the playground before school even if you are supervising. Children should be waiting on the Area D deck for the 8:30 bell.

For the safety and wellbeing of all our students we ask that you go directly to the office during school time if you need to pick up your child for an appointment or see your child during break times. The lovely ladies in the office will guide you to the procedures that need to be followed.

After school Rooms 10 and 12 request the parent/caregiver or sibling collect the students from the Area D deck. Bizzy Bodz are aware of this also. If you wish for your child to meet you elsewhere please make this clear to the class teacher.

We appreciate your cooperation and support these procedures.

Uniform

A huge amount of uniform items are left every year in the lost property, because they are unnamed. Please ensure all items of uniform are named and remind your child that anything not being used is to be put away in their bag (not on the floor somewhere or around the school). For girls, it is important that hair accessories comply with school colours and are simple (not pink or colourful or big fancy clips). Hats are compulsory for term one and four. No hat no play.

Room 11 students are required to bring their PE gear to school every odd week on a Tuesday.

They will come to school in their uniform and change at school  into their PE gear.

Bell times

Please enrol children in ‘Bizzy Bodz’ before and after school care which operates from our school hall as the school does not provide supervision prior to 8.30 or after 3pm.

How you can help

  • In the morning you can help by sharpening pencils
  • We would love to teach a group of parents from each class to sort and put home readers away to the school recourse book rooms
  • If you have knowledge or expertise associated with our learning please let us know, we would love to find out more.
  • In the mornings feel free to read to children or join in during morning activities
  • Sometimes teachers might need help with cutting or sorting resources, if you’re available we would love some assistance.

Our Learning – Inquiry

Big Idea :

How people recognise and regulate thoughts , feelings and emotions

Concepts :

mindfulness

resilience

diversity

perspective

Understanding Goals:

Students will understand-

  • What is mindfulness
  • How mindfulness can promote self-management and self regulation
  • How to identify and grow personal strengths

This term in maths we are focusing on statistics, number and problem solving. We are looking at the strand of “dance” through art. We will continue to learn reading and writing concepts at our own levels. We will be participating in a Pohutukawa “sports” session on Friday’s where we will teach different skill sets on a rotation. We will incorporate Maori language through greetings and commands into the school day.

Dates for the Diary

Meet the Teacher

We are hoping to see as many parents as possible at our meet the teacher evening on Thursday the 5th of February at 7pm, meet in the school hall.

Picnic

Our annual school picnic at 5.30pm on Tuesday the 11th of February. Look for the “TEAM POHUTUKAWA” sign.

Stay in the loop by following and joining us on our facebook, wechat or Skoolbag sites to get updates for all events throughout the year.

Here are some photos of Pohutukawa students. We have a class photo, an example of children participating in daily activities and how to properly wash our hands.
