Practical Information
Where we are
New Zealand is a beautiful country and a wonderful place to study. Pigeon Mountain Primary School is proud to be a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, which means we are committed to the wellbeing and safety of all international students.
Located in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest and most multicultural city, our school embraces students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. People in Auckland are friendly, welcoming, and supportive of newcomers—and our school community is no different.
We understand that moving to a new country can be both exciting and challenging. That’s why we have systems in place to help international students and their families settle in quickly and confidently.
What We Offer
Caring Community: We’re proud of our supportive school culture. New students are welcomed by classmates and buddy systems help them make friends and feel included from day one.
Support for Families: We can help connect you with local support groups and networks of other international families and new settlers.
Translation Support: Our staff have access to native speakers of many languages who can assist with translation and communication when needed.
Secure Storage: While New Zealand is generally very safe, we provide locked storage at school for personal items, giving students and families extra peace of mind.
Helpful Tips for Settling In
Adjusting to a new country takes time, but we’re here to help. Here are a few useful things to know about living and studying in New Zealand:
Road Safety: In New Zealand, cars drive on the left-hand side of the road. Always use designated pedestrian crossings and look both ways before crossing the street.
School Routine: Our school day usually starts at 8:50 am and finishes at 3:00 pm. We encourage students to arrive on time and bring healthy snacks and lunch.
Weather: Auckland’s weather can change quickly. It’s a good idea for students to have a raincoat or jacket in their school bag.
Footwear: Many children go barefoot in summer, even at school. It’s perfectly normal here—but shoes are still needed for sports and cooler days.
Cultural Differences: You may notice that teachers and students are on a first-name basis. This reflects the relaxed and respectful culture in New Zealand schools.
Health and Safety: The healthcare system in New Zealand is of a high standard. We can help guide you to local doctors, dentists, or other services if needed.
At Pigeon Mountain Primary School, we’re committed to making sure every international student and their family feels welcome, safe, and supported. We look forward to helping you make the most of your experience in New Zealand.
